Some people love white flowers, and some love blue. Both will love the two-toned petals of Scaevola Whirlwind Starlight. The annual S. aemula, also called Fan Flower, blooms long and continuously from planting through first frost. Pretty petals surround yellow centers up and down the flower stalk in whirls of summer color. The plant is heat tolerant and drought tolerant and attracts bees to its blooms.

Whirlwind Starlight grows in a trailing fashion to only 8 to 14 inches high but with branches that reach nearly 2 feet long. It’s a pretty spiller for patio containers and hanging baskets, and the trailing branches can spread out along the ground and act as a groundcover or edge plant in garden beds or other areas of the landscape. It can grow out straight or cascade down a hill or terrace. This new annual is about to become a favorite of gardeners.

Whirlwind® Starlight Fan Flower Care

Plant Scaevola Whirlwind Starlight in full sun in most any soil type. Give the plant average water and plenty of sun and then watch it grow. There is no need to deadhead or trim the plant. It will continue growing and blooming on its own. When planting your Scaevola, be sure to place it near the outer edge of pots or where it has room to spread in the landscape.

Adding compost or a balanced fertilizer early in the growing season can help feed Whirlwind Starlight. Fertilize container- or basket-grown plants a little more often to keep them thriving. Other than that, this is a low-maintenance powerhouse of blooms.

Whirlwind® Starlight Fan Flower Spacing

Space your Scaevola depending on where and how you use the plant. In containers and baskets, it can go near the edge and will grow over the pot. When using as a groundcover, place plants about 10 to 12 inches apart so they can grow into one another during the summer.
