Peonies are the quintessential cottage garden plant. They have fragrant blooms that open as the spring turns to summer. White Towers Peony has a fully double, pure white bloom that would make an amazing addition to any garden. Paeonia lactiflora is a herbaceous variety that sends out frilly, reddish shoots early in the spring and has foliage of fiery orange and red in the fall before dying back for the winter. The blooms are long lasting in a vase, filling a room with its distinctive scent with one stem.
Peonies are tolerant of a wide range of temperatures and will still put on a good show even if there are late frosts. The hardiness range is from zone 3-8. Deer and rabbit resistant. Few diseases or pests are troublesome for Peony. Full sun all day is perfect for Peonies grown in the lower hardiness zones. Peonies grown in the warmer zones will need afternoon shade to perform their best.
White Towers Peony Care
Paeonia lactiflora likes being planted in slightly acidic, 6.5pH, soil but will tolerate neutral and even slightly alkaline positions. Peonies resent being moved once they have established. Make sure not to plant the eye bud more than 1 inch below the soil. If planted deeper, the plant will have a hard time blooming. Fertilizing is only needed once a year. A slow release, balanced fertilizer should be applied after blooming. Well drained soil is very important so that the roots don’t rot during the winter.
Regular deadheading of the blooms will prolong the season. Leaving the last few blooms to ripen into seed heads will add to the fall interest of this plant. Pruning is not needed, since this plant is a herbaceous perennial that dies back to the ground in winter. Mulching with leaves in the fall will ensure that Peonies grown in the coldest zones stay insulated from snow and ice,
White Towers Peony Spacing
The spacing of White Towers Peony is 36-40 inches on center. This allows for full extension of the foliage in spring, while providing proper air circulation to reduce danger of diseases and pests. Mass plantings of one or 2 colors of Peony are stunning both visually and scentually.
