Allium Aflatunense Purple Sensation Bulbs send up rounded 4- to 5-inch flower heads packed with lilac-purple florets in late spring to early summer. The tall, straight stems reach about 24 to 30 inches tall, lifting the spherical flowers well above neighboring spring foliage. Each order includes 25 dormant bulbs, enough to establish a substantial group.

Purple Sensation blooms early among large-flowered ornamental allium, often opening as tulips are finishing and summer perennials are beginning to develop. Bees, butterflies, and other pollinators visit the many small florets, but deer, rabbits, and rodents generally avoid the onion-scented foliage and bulbs. The stems hold well for cutting, and dried flower heads remain decorative after the purple color has faded. Hardy in USDA zones 4-9, this allium perennializes well in sunny well-drained ground.

Plant Allium Aflatunense Purple Sensation Bulbs in fall after the soil has cooled, setting them about 6 inches deep, or roughly three times the bulb's height, with the pointed end facing upward. Full sun is needed for sturdy stems and abundant flowering, and the bulbs perform best in well-drained loam or sandy soil. A neutral or near-neutral soil pH, roughly 6.5 to 7.5, suits this ornamental onion well.

Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil, then allow autumn and winter rainfall to supply most of the moisture unless conditions remain unusually dry. As stems develop in spring, irrigate when the root zone has dried several inches down. Reduce watering after flowering as the leaves yellow and dormancy begins; prolonged wetness during dormancy can lead to bulb decline. If an established clump becomes congested after several seasons, lift and separate offsets once the foliage has finished.

Space bulbs about 8 to 10 inches apart in garden beds, making groups of eight or more for a fuller late-spring display. For container growing, choose a pot at least 12 inches deep with generous drainage holes and a coarse, free-draining potting mix. Containers should remain cold through winter, with extra protection in colder zones to reduce repeated freeze-thaw stress around the bulbs.

Peonies make excellent perennial neighbors because their expanding foliage fills the lower portion of the bed as allium leaves begin to decline, and both appreciate full sun and good drainage. In a large patio container, use calibrachoa to occupy the lower level after the alliums emerge, extending color into warmer weather while tolerating similar bright conditions.
