Introduce style and function to your landscape with AlliYUM!™ Garlic Chives. This ornamental plant features flat leaves that add a burst of leafy greenery spring through fall. When Allium blooms in the summer, spiky purple pom-pom flowers hover above the foliage. The flowers last for 3 to 4 weeks. Both the leaves and the flowers are edible and feature a soft onion and garlic flavor. Garlic Chives can be harvested spring through fall.
This plant is heat- and humidity-tolerant, as well as deer-resistant. Plant AlliYUM!™ Garlic Chives in a border, landscape, or container. Allium can be used strictly as a beautiful ornamental or focal point, but it is also right at home in a vegetable or herb garden. Bees and butterflies are known to visit this perennial that grows in USDA zones 5 through 9.
Alliyum! Garlic Chives Care
Garlic Chives thrive in full sun, and this plant has medium water needs. Allium will need water when the top few inches of the soil dry out. Soil should be slightly acidic and have a pH of 5.5 to 6.5. Feed Garlic Chives each year in the spring. Spent flowers can be cut back to maintain a tidy appearance.
This plant is very hardy and does not require any special winter care. Trim back the foliage in the fall or remove damaged growth in the spring before new greenery begins to grow.
Alliyum! Garlic Chives Spacing
Garlic Chives grow 10 to 16 inches tall, including the flowers that reach above the grass-like foliage. Leave 12 to 18 inches of space around the plants, so they have room to grow.
