Amaryllis Belladonna Bulbs save their display for late summer, sending up tall bare stems crowned with clusters of fragrant rosy-pink trumpets when many other garden flowers are slowing down. Amaryllis belladonna is a true South African bulb, distinct from the Hippeastrum commonly sold as holiday amaryllis. Its flowers appear before the strap-shaped leaves emerge, standing about 20 inches tall. The five premium bulbs provide enough material for a noticeable group. 

Native to the winter-rainfall region of South Africa, Amaryllis belladonna is adapted to mild, wetter winters followed by a warm, dry summer dormancy. The foliage develops after flowering and remains active through the cooler part of the year before dying away as the bulb enters its summer rest. It is most dependable as an outdoor perennial in mild climates around USDA zones 7-9, where established bulbs can remain in place and gradually form larger colonies. Use it in sunny gravel gardens, warm borders, protected foundation beds, or patio containers with excellent drainage.

Amaryllis Belladonna Bulbs Care

Plant Amaryllis Belladonna Bulbs in spring while dormant, choosing a warm, sheltered position in full sun, although partial shade is acceptable in hot climates. Set the bulbs shallowly so the neck and upper portion remain at or close to the soil surface. Light, freely draining loam or sandy soil is best, and this species tolerates acidic, neutral, and alkaline conditions.

Water newly planted bulbs enough to settle the soil around their roots. Once flowering and foliage growth begin, provide water during extended dry weather, allowing the soil surface to dry between applications. Reduce irrigation as the foliage declines and summer dormancy approaches. Dry summer conditions encourage the natural seasonal cycle of this Mediterranean-climate bulb. In garden soil, an annual layer of compost can provide adequate nutrition; container plants appreciate a diluted high-potassium feed during active growth. 

Cut spent flower stalks at the base after blooming unless seed is desired. The leaves feed the bulb through the cooler season and should be removed only after they yellow and collapse naturally. Established colonies generally flower best when left undisturbed; offsets should be separated only when clumps become crowded.

Space bulbs about 12 to 18 inches apart in garden beds so mature clumps have room to broaden. For containers, use a pot at least 10 to 12 inches deep with large drainage holes and a coarse, mineral-rich potting mix, leaving the upper third of the bulb exposed. In climates colder than its dependable outdoor range, container culture makes winter protection easier: move pots to a frost-protected location before severe freezes.

Agapanthus is a natural landscape partner because both appreciate warm sun, good drainage, and comparatively dry summer conditions once established. Rosemary also suits a Mediterranean-style planting, providing evergreen structure in a sunny bed with freely draining soil. Purslane can occupy the surface of a sunny container during the warm season, handling heat and leaner moisture conditions around the dormant bulbs.
