Old World charm meets New World maintenance in Wisteria 'Amethyst Falls’ (Wisteria frutescens ‘Amethyst Falls’). This hybrid of native wisteria has the abundant, fragrant lilac-colored blooms of wisterias, but some bonus features, including less propensity to spread aggressively. Instead, this fast-growing evergreen vine reaches about 5 to 6 feet high and 4 to 5 feet wide on average. Heavy blooming starts in late spring with 4- to 6-inch flower clusters all over the plant.
Amethyst Falls lacks the aggressive nature of Oriental varieties of wisteria, and this hybrid is both deer resistant and drought tolerant. In zones 7 through 9, add this wisteria near a trellis, patio or pergola post, or any upright structure that needs some bling. It can serve as a beautiful spring and summer screen or as a small windbreak. The plant thrives in full sun or mostly sunny conditions. If you need more reason to feature these wisterias in your landscape, consider that they serve as host plants for several butterfly species.
Amethyst Falls Wisteria Care
Dig a hole at least two times the width of the wisteria’s container and place the root ball in the hole so that the plant sits 1 to 2 inches above ground level. Fill the hole and water, then after the soil settles, add more if needed. Add a 1 to 2 inch layer of mulch around the base of the container or ground, avoiding stacking the mulch against the plant stem. This wisteria can grow in nearly any soil type.
Water regularly and deeply until the vine is established and gradually cut back on watering. Once established, the plant can go longer between waterings. In most soil types and potting mixes, this wisteria needs no fertilizing. Add a light feeding of 5-10-5 fertilizer once in spring if it is growing in poor or sandy soil. Prune Amethyst Falls lightly to shape after it is done with spring flowering. Be sure to provide a trellis, fence, post, or other structure to support the mature vine.
Amethyst Falls Wisteria Spacing
This wisteria needs 6 to 12 feet of room to climb and spread as it should. For a seamless effect on fences or larger structures, space the plants about 9 feet apart from center to center.
