The Apeldoorn Tulip Mixture pairs scarlet-red flowers with golden yellow blooms in mid-spring planting. Tulipa 'Apeldoorn' and Tulipa 'Golden Apeldoorn' produce large, classic egg-shaped blooms about 5 inches across on sturdy 22- to 24-inch stems. The red selection shows a dark mark near the flower base. Each pack contains 20 bulbs, giving enough material for a substantial grouping. 

Both cultivars belong to the Darwin Hybrid class, a group valued for large flowers, strong stems, and better perennial performance than many other garden tulips. Their weather-resistant stems hold up well through typical spring wind and rain, and the long flower stems are excellent for bouquets. Hardy in USDA zones 3-8, they can return for several seasons when grown in sunny, well-drained ground. Use the mixture along walks, through perennial borders, in formal spring beds, or in mass plantings where the red and yellow flowers can form a strong two-color display.

Apeldoorn Tulip Mixture Bulbs Care

Plant Apeldoorn Tulip Mixture Bulbs in fall once soil temperatures have cooled, ideally about 4 to 6 weeks before the ground freezes. Set the bulbs 6 to 8 inches deep with the pointed end facing upward. Full sun is best for strong stems and repeat flowering, though partial shade is acceptable if the planting receives several hours of direct spring sun. Choose loose, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH around 6.0 to 7.0, avoiding low areas that hold water after rain or snowmelt.

After planting, water deeply once so the soil settles around the bulbs, then rely mainly on seasonal rainfall unless autumn stays unusually dry. When growth begins in spring, water during extended dry periods and let the upper soil dry between soakings; reduce irrigation as leaves begin to yellow and go dormant after bloom. Apply a balanced bulb fertilizer at planting or as shoots emerge in early spring, following label rates. In colder gardens, a light winter mulch can help moderate abrupt soil temperature swings.

Remove spent flowers after the petals fall so the bulbs do not spend energy producing seed. Wait until the foliage has yellowed and begun to collapse before clearing it away, since that period supports the next season's flower formation. In rural or wooded areas, protect emerging growth from deer and rabbits and consider mesh over the planting area to discourage squirrels and voles.

Space bulbs about 4 to 6 inches apart in garden beds, grouping at least 10 together for a fuller display. For containers, use a pot at least 12 inches deep with generous drainage holes and a loose potting mix, placing bulbs slightly closer together for seasonal impact. In zones 3-5, overwinter containers in a cold sheltered location such as an unheated garage or shed so the bulbs receive chilling while the root zone is protected from repeated severe freezes.

Bee balm can follow the tulip season in sunny borders, with its later growth filling space as the tulip foliage finishes its cycle. Ninebark works well as a shrub companion in larger beds, creating a substantial backdrop behind the tall red and yellow tulips. Cuphea flowers can take over large well-drained containers once the spring bulbs have gone dormant.
