It’s possible to grow your own coffee beans in your garden or inside your home. This evergreen plant produces fragrant, white blossoms that mature to coffee beans. Imagine the look on your guests’ faces when you tell them that you grew the beans used to brew the coffee you’re serving them. The leaves can be used to brew delicious tea.

Coffee plants make excellent low-care house plants. It has glossy, dark-green leaves with ruffled edges on willowy stems. When grown in a container, their height is usually limited to between 4 and 6 feet. Coffee arabica can also be grown as an accent plant or to create a hedge in warmer climates. When grown outdoors, coffee plants will reach up to 15 tall and 8 feet wide. Coffee plantations typically trim the plants to a height where the beans can be harvested without the need for a ladder.

Arabica Coffee Plant Care

Plant coffee plant in shady to partially shady conditions in USDA hardiness zones 9 to 11 in moist soil. If you grow this plant in a container, make sure to empty the saucer underneath. Coffee plants don’t like wet feet. Fertilize once or twice a year in spring and summer, especially when growing this plant in a container where nutrients are limited.

Arabica Coffee Plant Spacing

Plant individual species 8 feet apart to create a hedge and further apart if you plan on harvesting the beans. You’ll need to leave sufficient room to freely walk around each plant.

Posted by Matt Cooper on Feb 21, 2023

Although we just received this plant in the past week, I am already impressed with how healthy and beautiful it is! I moved it to a slightly larger pot, and it already looks vibrant and at home! Will DEFINITELY plan to order more in the future!
