Growing Zones
Bring easy Mediterranean charm to your space with the compact, fruiting Arbequina Olive Tree. Silvery, narrow leaves shimmer in the light, while the naturally branching form stays tidy in containers or small gardens. It’s self-fruitful, adaptable, and surprisingly forgiving for new growers.
Plant it on a sunny patio, train it as an airy indoor accent, or anchor a warm-climate landscape. Expect fragrant spring blooms followed by small, flavorful olives for curing or oil, with harvest typically late fall into early winter. Year-round foliage keeps the look fresh in every season.
Arbequina Olive Tree Care
Give 6–8+ hours of direct sun daily. Plant in sharply drained soil; a sandy loam or cactus/citrus potting mix works well. Aim for pH 6.0–8.0, as olives tolerate slightly alkaline conditions. Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil are dry, then soak thoroughly until excess drains; reduce in winter. Feed in spring and midsummer with a slow-release citrus/evergreen fertilizer or a liquid 2–1–1 during active growth.
Prune in late winter to open the canopy and maintain size; remove any crossing branches. Hardy outdoors in zones 8–11; in colder zones, grow in a container and overwinter indoors in the brightest window you have. Generally pest resistant; monitor for scale or mites and treat early.
Arbequina Olive Tree Spacing
For a single specimen, allow 12–15 feet of space from other trees and 4–6 feet from walls or paths for airflow and light. For a loose screen, plant 8–10 feet on center and hedge lightly after harvest. In containers, start with a 16–20 inch wide pot with drainage (14–16 inches deep minimum); size up to 22–24 inches as roots fill the container.
Place indoor containers within 2–3 feet of a south- or west-facing window or use a full-spectrum grow light 12–18 inches above the canopy. Stake young trees their first windy season if needed.
