Feature
The Ariane Fern (Nephrolepis exaltata) is a fast-growing, tough houseplant prized for its dark green, horizontal fronds that bring elegance to any indoor space. Known for its resilience and classic horizontal growth habit, this Boston fern cultivar is perfect for beginners and plant enthusiasts alike. Its ability to thrive in cooler indoor temperatures and its air-purifying qualities make it a dream plant for home or office environments.
Best Locations For Growing Ariane Fern
The Ariane Fern thrives in medium light indoors, making it well-suited for living rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms. Bathrooms are particularly ideal due to their higher humidity, which supports the fern's lush growth. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight, which can scorch its delicate fronds, and ensure temperatures stay between 60–75°F.
Ariane Fern Sunlight Requirements
This fern grows best in medium light conditions with filtered or indirect sunlight. Place it near a north- or east-facing window, or in an area with filtered light. Too much shade can result in sparse fronds, while excessive sunlight can burn the foliage.
Ariane Fern Care
The Ariane Fern requires moist, well-draining soil rich in organic matter. A peat-based potting mix with added perlite is ideal for retaining moisture without becoming waterlogged. Keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid soggy conditions to prevent root rot. Repot every 1–2 years during spring when the plant shows signs of outgrowing its container. Choose a pot 1–2 inches larger than the root ball, ensuring it has proper drainage.
Prune browning or damaged fronds to maintain a tidy appearance and encourage new growth. If the plant becomes leggy, trim back side fronds and runners to promote a fuller, bushier shape. High humidity is essential—mist the plant regularly, use a pebble tray, or group it with other plants to create a microclimate.
Watering Ariane Fern
Water the Ariane Fern frequently, keeping the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. During the growing season (spring and summer), water once or twice a week, ensuring the potting mix doesn’t dry out completely. In the fall and winter, reduce watering to every 10–14 days as the plant enters dormancy. Signs of under-watering include drooping fronds, while overly wet soil may cause root rot.
This fern thrives in high humidity levels above 50%. To maintain optimal conditions, mist the plant regularly, use a pebble tray filled with water, or place it near a humidifier. Low humidity can cause the fronds' tips to turn brown.
Feeding Ariane Fern
Feed the Ariane Fern with a liquid houseplant fertilizer, such as 20-10-20, every two weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Apply the feed at half the strength recommended on the label. Skip fertilization in the fall and winter months when the plant’s growth slows. Over-fertilization can lead to salt buildup and browning fronds, so dilute fertilizer and apply sparingly.
