Armandii Snowdrift Clematis adds a cascade of starry white flowers with winter-to-spring fragrance to vertical spaces. Clematis armandii 'Snowdrift' is an evergreen vine with leathery, glossy dark green leaves and pure white star-shaped flowers. The blooms open in late winter to early spring and carry a sweet vanilla-like scent that is easy to notice near patios, gates, and covered entries. We think its best use is on a sturdy pergola or fence where the flowers can hang forward and the foliage can stay useful after bloom.
This Chinese clematis selection grows quickly once established and can cover a large structure with year-round screening. It climbs by twining leaf stems, so it needs lattice, wire, trellis panels, or another support it can grip. The evergreen foliage gives it more winter presence than most clematis, while the flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds in mild early-season weather. Use it to cover fences, soften a wall, shade a seating area, or create a fragrant privacy screen where cold winter wind is not severe.
Armandii Snowdrift Clematis Care
Plant Armandii Snowdrift Clematis in full sun to partial shade, with at least 5 hours of direct sun or bright filtered light for best flowering. It grows best in moist, organically rich, well-drained soil and does well in a slightly acidic to neutral pH range of about 6.0 to 7.0. Avoid heavy wet soil, and mulch the root zone lightly to keep roots cool without burying the crown.
Water young vines regularly so the root ball stays evenly moist while the plant settles in. Established plants can handle short dry periods, but wilting leaves during heat mean it needs a slow, deep soak. Feed after flowering with a low-nitrogen slow-release fertilizer or compost, and expect growth to slow during winter even though the leaves remain evergreen.
Armandii Snowdrift Clematis is a Group 1 clematis, so prune right after flowering rather than cutting it back hard in winter. Remove tangled, dead, or overcrowded stems, then shorten overly long shoots to keep the vine within its support. Wear gloves when pruning, since clematis sap may irritate skin, and keep pets from chewing the foliage.
Armandii Snowdrift Clematis Spacing
Space Armandii Snowdrift Clematis 4 to 6 feet apart when covering fences, walls, or long trellis sections. For container growing, use an 18-inch or larger pot with drainage and a permanent support that can handle a large evergreen vine. Plant hellebores, ferns, hostas, or leucothoe at the base of garden specimens where filtered light, cool soil, and woodland-style texture complement the vine.
