Mature Spread
Announcing an all-new hybrid succulent for growing indoors or out: the Art & Sol™ Thunderbird Mangave combines the best traits of Manfreda and Agave plants in a much smaller size. The dark red spotted leaves are juicy, succulent, and compact, with a height and spread of 12 inches. Art & Sol™ Mangave hybrids are more tolerant of moist soils, making them a great choice to include in mixed seasonal plantings with other annuals and perennials.
The interesting leaf shape and deeper coloring will add interest to planters, hanging baskets, or garden beds. Growing Thunderbird in full sun will encourage more vibrant coloring of the leaves, although this plant can grow well in partial shade. Mangave is a great low-maintenance houseplant over the fall and winter, requiring little watering, fertilizing, or pruning. Place the plant in a sunny window and water once every 10-14 days.
Art & Sol™ Thunderbird Mangave Care
Mangave requires well-draining soil and full sun to put on the best show of foliage color and shape. Wet soil can be tolerated for a short period, although the roots may begin to rot in pots that do not have sufficient drainage. Sandy, stony, and loamy soils are perfect for planting this tender perennial in a garden bed. In containers, use a peat-free potting mix with plenty of perlite added. Specialty cacti and succulent potting mixes are great. Water once a week during active growth in spring and summer. Reduce watering when bringing the plant indoors to overwinter.
Pruning is rarely needed for Mangave plants. Only trim away any dead or dying leaves as they turn brown and dry up. Transfer plants indoors when the nighttime temperatures fall to 50 degrees F (10 C) in the autumn. Even a light frost can cause serious damage to the foliage.
Art & Sol™ Thunderbird Mangave Spacing
The compact shape of Art & Sol™ Thunderbird Mangave makes it easy to pot into small containers or tuck it into empty spots in the garden. Space plants 12 inches apart to provide plenty of air circulation and space for the thick leaves to spread. A pot with at least a 6-inch diameter is recommended when growing mangave as a specimen or houseplant.
