Turn up the saturation in shady beds and bright borders with Balboa Sunset® Heuchera. The ruffled foliage shifts through green, plum, and red, with wine-red undersides that glow when backlit. Balboa Sunset® Heuchera stays low and upright for coral bells, so it doesn’t disappear at the front of a bed or get lost in a container. Our design team uses this heuchera to add contrast in part sun spots where flowers aren’t doing much.

Heuchera 'DOHEUGABECI' sends up airy wands of bell-shaped blooms in spring that add a delicate lift without hiding the leaves. It does best in enriched, well-drained soil and appreciates consistent moisture while it roots in. Use it along the edge of a path, in a mixed container, or at the front of a shade border for steady texture. It also mixes well in layered plantings under shrubs because it stays tidy and doesn’t sprawl.

Balboa Sunset® Heuchera Care

Give Balboa Sunset® Heuchera partial sun, especially morning sun with some afternoon protection in hotter exposures. Plant in enriched, well-drained soil, and keep the crown at the same level it was in the pot, never buried. Slightly acidic to neutral soil is a comfortable pH range.

Water deeply during the first growing season. Afterward water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry to the touch. Feed lightly through the growing season, especially in containers where nutrients wash out faster. Avoid excess winter moisture, which can lead to crown issues.

In early spring, pull away old, faded leaves to make room for fresh growth. If you get frost heaving in fluctuating winters, a light mulch around the plant helps, but don’t pile mulch onto the crown. Remove spent flower stems after bloom if you want the foliage to stay the focus.

Balboa Sunset® Heuchera Spacing

Space plants about 14–18 inches apart so the mounds touch without crowding. For containers, a 10–12 inch pot works for one plant, or use a wider bowl to combine it with other shade companions. Good pairings include impatiens and lobelia for seasonal color that echoes the cool tones without competing for root space.  In the landscape, grow Balboa Sunset® Heuchera with hellebore and ferns for a layered, shade-friendly mix that stays attractive from spring into fall.
