Growing Zones
Turn up the saturation in shady beds and bright borders alike. Balboa Sunset Heuchera mounds into ruffled foliage that shifts through green, plum, and red, with wine-red undersides that glow when backlit. In spring, airy wands of bell-shaped blooms add a delicate lift without hiding the leaves.
Compact, versatile, and easy to place, it slides into containers, woodland edges, and front-of-border ribbons for season-long color. Leave the seedheads for soft texture, or clip them for a tidier, modern look.
Balboa Sunset Heuchera Care
Provide 3–6 hours of sun, ideally morning sun with afternoon shade; in cool-summer climates it tolerates more sun if soil stays evenly moist. Plant in well-drained soil enriched with organic matter; target pH 6.0–7.0. Water to establish, then water when the top 1 inch of soil is dry; avoid waterlogged conditions.
Mulch 1–2 inches to conserve moisture and keep roots cool, pulling mulch back from the crown. Feed lightly in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or a thin compost top-dress; heavy feeding isn’t needed. Remove spent flower stems and trim any tattered leaves in late winter or early spring to refresh growth. Hardy in USDA zones 4–9; semi-evergreen in mild winters.
Balboa Sunset Heuchera Spacing
For a single specimen, allow a 16–20 inch circle. For a low, colorful drift or edging, plant 12–16 inches on center so foliage knits without overcrowding. Keep 12 inches from paths to showcase the ruffled leaves. In containers, use a 10–12 inch wide pot with drainage; pair with fine-textured grasses or spring bulbs for contrast. No staking required.
