Bar Harbor Creeping Juniper Tree Form (Juniperus horizontalis 'Bar Harbor' - Std) is a low-growing, spreading evergreen grafted onto an upright standard to create a striking weeping tree form. The silvery blue-green foliage takes on attractive purple tones in the winter, providing year-round color and interest. At maturity, this unique plant reaches 5 to 6 feet tall with a cascading spread of 3 to 4 feet. It works beautifully as a specimen or focal point in a mixed border, rock garden, or container planting.
This juniper is extremely cold hardy and adaptable, thriving across a wide range of climates. It is drought tolerant once established and known to resist deer, making it a reliable, low-maintenance choice for many landscapes. The weeping, trailing canopy adds a sculptural quality that few other small trees can offer. It attracts birds and provides excellent texture and structure throughout the seasons.
Bar Harbor Creeping Juniper Tree Form Care
Plant Bar Harbor Creeping Juniper Tree in full sun for best results, choosing a location with well-drained soil. It tolerates a range of soil types, including sandy and rocky soils, as long as drainage is adequate. Water newly planted trees regularly during the first growing season to help them establish. Once established, this juniper is highly drought tolerant and requires only occasional watering during extended dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy new growth.
Pruning requirements are minimal for this tree form. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches as needed to maintain a tidy appearance. To preserve the natural weeping shape, avoid heavy cutting of the trailing stems. If the graft union produces any upright shoots from below the graft, remove them promptly to keep the standard form intact. Light shaping can be done in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.
Bar Harbor Creeping Juniper Tree Form Spacing
Space Bar Harbor Creeping Juniper Tree Forms at least 4 to 5 feet apart to allow the cascading canopy to spread without crowding neighboring plants. This tree form works well in a container at least 18 inches in diameter and depth to accommodate its root system and provide stability. Avoid placing it under larger trees where it will receive too much shade. Keep it away from structures or hardscapes that could interfere with its natural weeping habit.
