Barbie Pink Guava produces sweet, pink-fleshed fruit on a compact tropical tree that can be kept small enough for a patio harvest. Psidium guajava 'Barbie Pink' matures about 10 to 20 feet tall and 8 to 12 feet wide in the ground, with fragrant white blooms that attract pollinators before the yellow-green fruit begins to size up. Compared with many pink guavas, its fruit is larger and lower in pectin, making it especially good for fresh eating, juice, smoothies, and jam. This is a self-pollinating guava, since it can fruit alone but usually crops heavier with another guava nearby.

Barbie Pink Guava Care

Plant Barbie Pink Guava in spring or early summer once nights are warm, spacing in-ground trees at least 10 to 15 feet from buildings, hardscape, and other trees. Give it full sun with 6 to 8 hours of direct light, loose sandy or loamy soil, acidic to neutral soil pH around 4.5 to 7.0, and sharp drainage to protect the roots. No deadheading is needed, but trim after harvest or in winter to remove dead wood, open the center, and keep the canopy at a harvestable size.

Growing Barbie Pink Guava

Barbie Pink Guava fruit typically ripens 90 to 150 days after bloom, with the main crop often coming in late summer to fall in warm climates. Give it enough room for a small tree outdoors, or prune it to 3 to 6 feet tall in a container for easier winter protection. It starts active growth in warm weather, and can be grown indoors over winter in the brightest window available, though fruiting is best with outdoor summer sun.

Growing Barbie Pink Guava in Containers

Use Barbie Pink Guava as a patio specimen or edible container tree in zones colder than 9, starting with a 10- to 15-gallon pot and moving up as roots fill the container. Repot every 2 to 3 years or refresh the top layer of mix annually, using a well-drained citrus or tropical fruit potting blend. In containers, it acts as the thriller plant and can be paired with basil plants and oregano for edible patio companions. Combine it with lavender and rosemary in the landscape where soil stays on the drier side.

Watering Barbie Pink Guava

Water deeply when the top 2 to 3 inches of soil feel dry, giving container plants enough water that some drains from the bottom. Wilting leaves can signal drought stress, while yellowing leaves and sour-smelling soil can point to too much water.

Feeding Barbie Pink Guava

Feed during active growth with a balanced fruit-tree fertilizer that includes micronutrients, especially iron and magnesium. Apply lightly and regularly from spring through summer, then pause in winter so the tree can slow down without tender new growth.
