Bred in 2016 by David Austin, the legendary rose breeder, Bathsheba™ English Rose brings an air of softness, tenderness, and comfort to your landscape. Featuring 170-petaled, large blooms with gorgeous soft-peachy tones and a creamy outer layer, this rose plant will infuse the air with its floral aroma of delicate myrrh and warm honeyed tea and brighten your landscape with verdant green foliage. This variety of rose blooms multiple times over the season, which can last all summer long.
The heroine Bathsheba of Far from the Maddening Crowd by Thomas Hardy inspired the name of this rose. Hardy in zones 5 through 11, this rose will exceed the romance and resilience of its namesake. It attracts bees and other pollinators with its aromatic fragrance and will vigorously climb any trellis, obelisk, or support structure with elegance and grace. Its manner, habit, and exquisite appearance make it perfect for a specimen planting or focal grouping. David Austin recommends a 6-foot wall, fence, or doorway to display this stunning rose.
Bathsheba™ English Rose Care
Plant this rose in slightly acidic, well-draining soil in an area that receives plenty of sun, ideally facing either east, south, or west. As a short climbing rose, it is essential to plant it with a structure to support its climbing growth of up to 10 feet. Water deeply and regularly during the first year to promote deep and healthy roots. Soak the roots at the base of the plant, avoiding the canes, leaves, bools, and bottom of the trunk. If the soil above the roots is dry up to your second knuckle, your plant is thirsty and ready for a drink! Avoid overwatering, which can lead to fungal root infections and other diseases. Feed once or twice during the summer with a slow-releasing rose fertilizer.
After the first season, prune your rose canes back by one-third; prune back by half in the following years. Consider the overall shape when you prune, and make your cuts in places that will contribute to the general form. If your plant is getting taller than desired, prune back the canes to 18 inches after the first batch of blooms in the summer to rejuvenate the shrub.
Bathsheba™ English Rose Spacing
This rose has a height of 8 to 10 feet and a spread of 2 to 3 feet—plant it with enough room to grow to its mature size, leaving about 3 to 4 feet between plantings. Plant it about 8 inches away from a wall to leave enough room for the roots.
