The Bicolor Dracaena (Dracaena marginata 'Bicolor'), also known as the Bicolor Dragon Tree, is an elegant houseplant with slender green leaves edged in bold red and pink hues. Its upright, architectural growth habit makes it a stunning focal point in any indoor space. Native to Madagascar, this low-maintenance plant thrives in a variety of lighting conditions and is a favorite for homes and offices alike.

Best Locations for Growing Bicolor Dracaena

This plant thrives in medium to bright indirect light, making it suitable for living rooms, bedrooms, or offices with sufficient natural light. High-humidity areas like kitchens and bathrooms are also excellent options to keep its foliage lush. Keep it away from drafts, as temperatures below 60°F may cause stress. Exercise caution around pets, as the plant is toxic if ingested.

Bicolor Dracaena Sunlight Requirements

The Bicolor Dracaena prefers bright indirect light but tolerates medium light conditions. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch its leaves. Place it near an east-facing window or a few feet from a south- or west-facing window for optimal growth. Rotate the plant periodically to ensure even development.

Bicolor Dracaena Care

The Bicolor Dracaena thrives in moist, well-draining soil. A standard indoor potting mix with added perlite or sand works well to maintain proper drainage. Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry before watering thoroughly. Repot every 2–3 years or when the plant becomes root-bound, using a pot 1–2 inches larger with drainage holes. Avoid frequent repotting, as Dracaenas are slow growers and adapt well to being slightly root-bound.

Pruning is optional but helps control size and shape. Remove yellowed or damaged leaves as needed. If the plant becomes leggy, cut the stems to the desired height, and new growth will emerge below the cut.

Watering Bicolor Dracaena

Water the plant when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry to the touch. Use distilled or filtered water to prevent fluoride buildup, which can cause leaf tips to brown. Reduce watering during winter when the plant’s growth slows, allowing the soil to dry out slightly more.

Though the Bicolor Dracaena tolerates standard household humidity, it benefits from occasional misting, a pebble tray, or grouping with other plants to increase moisture levels. This is especially helpful in dry winter conditions, as low humidity may result in browning leaf tips.

Feeding Bicolor Dracaena

Feed the plant monthly during the growing season (spring through early fall) with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Slow-release fertilizer pellets can also be used, following the package instructions. Avoid fertilizing during winter, as the plant enters a resting period.

We encourage all plant lovers to purchase the Plant Addicts Warranty, whether you're a new gardener or an expert. There are many variables outside of anyone's control that can cause a plant to die. Guarantee and Warranty

Plant Shipping

Below are some factors we consider when determining when to ship the plants depending on the timing of the order.

Winter to Early Spring

We ship only when it's warm enough to plant in your growing zone.
Sometimes plants aren't completely ready to sell and ship in early spring. We will wait until the plants are ready before shipping so you don't get a subpar product.
For Southern plants we will be able to ship much earlier than plants coming from our northern nursery.

Summer

If there is extreme heat we may delay shipping for a week or several weeks.
We review what areas the plants are traveling through as well as your location.

Fall into Winter

We’ll ship plants out all the way up to the end of the fall planting season!

Winter

Get your order in early to reserve your plants for Spring planting!

Once your plant is shipped you’ll receive an automated email with tracking information.
