Mature Spread
For large sweet peppers 7 inches in length with great flavor, look no further than the Big Bertha Sweet Pepper. Producing bell peppers with thick flesh and few seeds, they can be harvested green in as little as 70 to 75 days, or if patience allows for them to further ripen, red.
With a 0 Scoville rating and no heat, they are perfect for those who don’t like the sweet flavor of mild peppers. Big Bertha are ideal for adding to salads or stuffing and roasting.
Big Bertha Sweet Pepper Plant Care
For the best yields, Big Bertha Sweet Pepper needs to be grown in fertile, moist soil where it will get full sun. This pepper plant is small enough to grow in pots. If grown in the ground, plant them at a distance of 20 to 24 inches apart to allow them space to mature. As with all peppers, only plant them out once all risk of frost has passed.
Growing Big Bertha Sweet Pepper Plant
This sun-loving pepper can produce delicious green or red peppers, ready to pick in as little as 10 weeks. This is a compact version that grows to a maximum of 24 inches high by 18 inches wide. It is suitable for growing outdoors or in a greenhouse.
If growing Big Bertha in a container, choose a five-gallon pot with plenty of drainage holes. Use fresh compost and avoid any soil used for growing nightshade varieties in the previous season.
Watering Big Bertha Sweet Pepper Plant
Water regularly after planting until established. Peppers are best watered deeply and often to prevent them from drying out. Avoid letting them sit in overly wet or waterlogged soil though.
Feeding Big Bertha Sweet Pepper Plant
If grown in fertile soil, feeding peppers is not strictly necessary. However, once established, Big Bertha Sweet Pepper can be fed with a balanced fruit and vegetable fertilizer every four weeks to encourage healthy growth and heavy yields.
