Feature
Hoya bilobata is one of the smallest Hoya houseplants. Its small, succulent leaves emerge with a blush of reddish-pink and mature into a deep green. The plant produces flower heads on long stems, each bearing up to 20 individual flowers with red centers and pink edges, no larger than 1/10 inch (3 mm). The scent is mild and sweet, similar to other varieties in the genus. Bilobata makes a great companion to larger Hoya varieties in your collection.
Best Locations for Growing Bilobata Hoya
All Hoya plants thrive in medium to high humidity, making them well-suited for kitchens and bathrooms. The naturally trailing growth habit of Bilobata Hoya makes it an excellent choice for either growing in a small hanging basket or adding to a larger arrangement of succulents or tropical plants for display on a table or low shelf.
Bilobata Hoya Sunlight Requirements
Bright, indirect light is ideal for the healthiest growth of Hoya plants. They can tolerate filtered or medium light, such as from a bright north-facing window or across the room from a south-facing window. However, intense bright light, like that from a south-facing window or an uncovered deck or patio, can bleach the leaves and potentially scorch them.
Bilobata Hoya Care
Grow Bilobata Hoya in a potting mix that is rich and well-draining. Incorporating orchid bark or vermiculite into the mix will help retain moisture between waterings. While this slow-growing plant doesn’t require frequent repotting, if you do need to repot, increase the container size by only one or two increments. Regularly remove dead leaves and spent flower heads to keep the plant tidy and free of disease or pests.
Watering Bilobata Hoya
Water your Bilobata Hoya weekly during the spring and summer. Allow the top 1/2 inch of soil to dry out between waterings, and be sure to discard any excess water in the saucer or cache pot. In winter, when the plant’s growth slows, you can reduce watering to once every 2-3 weeks.
Feeding Bilobata Hoya
Feed your Hoya with a diluted liquid fertilizer formulated for flowering houseplants or orchids. The middle number of the NPK ratio (phosphorus) should be slightly higher to support flower development. Apply the fertilizer once a month during the spring and summer, and stop feeding during the winter months.
