Feature
While the name Black Gold Snake Plant may first evoke feelings of dread, this drought-tolerant ornamental plant has nothing to do with snakes, venom, or whimpering prey, but instead, refers to its variegated foliage. And, rather than posing a threat, this West African original, resembling a cluster of snakes springing upward out of the ground with its emerald-green leaves etched in bright pineapple yellow, actually improves health by removing impurities from the air. Also known as Sansevieria trifasciata, syn. Dracaena trifasciata, Laurentii Snake Plant, Mother-in-Law's Tongue, Saint George's Sword, and Viper's Bowstring Hemp, this herbaceous, drought-tolerant plant has a straight-forward and easy care regimen; it’s the perfect choice for any newbie gardener.
Best Locations For Growing Black Gold Snake Plant
While tolerating a wide range of light levels from low to bright indirect light, Black Gold Snake Plant thrives in bright indirect light. Adding a penchant for temperatures varying between 55 to 85 degrees, this perennial will do well in any brightly lit, relatively warm room, as long as it is safe from direct light. Speaking of safety, though, due to this plant’s mild toxicity to people and pets, it’s also wise to keep this perennial out of the reach of any little hands or paws.
Black Gold Snake Plant Sunlight Requirements
Due to the affinity this plant has for bright indirect light, its best to maintain Black Gold Snake Plant at least 3 to 5 feet away from a south-facing window or within five feet of an east-facing or west-facing window.
Black Gold Snake Plant Care
This evergreen thrives in aerated, well-draining soil. A typical cactus or succulent potting mix will suffice. Black Gold Snake Plant requires minimal pruning. To encourage growth, simply trim dead leaves when needed. Repot this ornamental once a year. After blooming, this flowering plant will produce offsets, which can be used along with stolons or division to propagate this herbaceous plant.
Watering Black Gold Snake Plant
Black Gold Snake Plant does not need frequent watering, especially if the humidity level is above 40%. This drought-tolerant perennial, however, is susceptible to fungal diseases such as root rot so it is wise to do a moisture check prior to watering. Simply insert a finger one to two inches below the surface of the soil and water if it feels dry.
Feeding Black Gold Snake Plant
Black Gold Snake Plant does not require frequent fertilizing. Typically, you will need to feed this ornamental plant only one time per year. When feeding, use a balanced fertilizer during the spring months.
