Growing Zones
The golden flowers and seed heads of the Blue Grama Grass make it elegant and attractive from midsummer until the fall. Botanically known as Bouteloua gracilis 'Honeycomb', this ornamental grass remains compact at around 24 to 30 inches tall and is loved by pollinators. It produces thin green stems upon which its flag-like blooms develop with yellow pollen. This grass is tough and easy to grow.
Being low maintenance, the Blue Grama Grass needs little ongoing care. Once established it is drought tolerant and is even resistant to deer. Ideal for growing as a specimen or in a group and for naturalizing. This grass is native to parts of the North American prairies.
Blue Grama Grass Care
The Blue Grama Grass thrives when it is grown in full sun and in free-draining soil. It can cope with most soil types apart from those prone to waterlogging or with poor drainage. Regular water is required until establishment, after which it is drought tolerant. Although not strictly required, a slow-release fertilizer can be applied in the spring.
The Blue Grama Grass is simple to care for. In late winter or early spring, you simply cut back the previous year’s growth before the new shoots appear.
Blue Grama Grass Spacing
Over time, the Blue Grama Grass can reach 24 to 30 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. When growing in a group, you can plant this ornamental grass at a spacing of around 20 to 24 inches.
