Blue Grape Hyacinth Super Sack creates dense spring colonies of cobalt-blue bells with a lightly sweet, grape-like fragrance. Muscari armeniacum grows only 6 to 8 inches tall, forming tight flower clusters above narrow green leaves. With 50 large 8-9 cm bulbs in each sack, there is enough material to establish a broad drift. We always enjoy grape hyacinths beside walks, where their small flowers and fragrance can be easily appreciated.

This hardy perennial grows in USDA zones 4-9 and spreads through offsets and seedlings that gradually enlarge the colony. It flowers in mid spring and can succeed beneath deciduous trees, along shrub borders, in rock gardens, or at the front of perennial beds. Muscari tolerate partial shade well although blooming is better in more sun. Deer and rabbits generally avoid grape hyacinths, making them a smart choice in areas with regular browsing.

Plant Blue Grape Hyacinth Super Sack Bulbs in fall after the soil has cooled but several weeks before it freezes, setting them 3 to 4 inches deep with the pointed end facing upward. Choose a site in full sun to partial shade with freely draining loamy or sandy soil, although Muscari is adaptable to a range of soil textures. Soil pH is flexible, with 6.0 to 8.0 supporting bulb growth.

Water the planting thoroughly after installation, then let normal autumn and winter precipitation provide most of the moisture unless conditions are unusually dry. When foliage and flower spikes are active in spring, irrigate after the upper soil begins to dry, then reduce supplemental water as the leaves yellow and summer dormancy begins. A light application of balanced bulb fertilizer as spring shoots emerge can support established colonies, though it is rarely needed in rich soil. Muscari may send up fresh leaves again in fall, and this seasonal foliage is normal.

Pruning is minimal because spent flowers can simply be left in place when naturalizing is the priority. If self-seeding is not desired, remove fading flower clusters before seed matures, but leave the green foliage until it declines on its own. Crowded colonies can be lifted and separated after the leaves have faded, with healthy offsets replanted immediately or held for fall planting.

Space bulbs about 2 to 3 inches apart in beds, grouping 15 or more when establishing a substantial drift or edging. For containers, choose a pot at least 8 inches deep with drainage holes and position the bulbs fairly close together for a fuller spring display. Keep outdoor pots cold through winter for proper chilling, protecting exposed containers from prolonged saturation and repeated hard freezing in colder regions.

Columbine pairs well with grape hyacinths beneath deciduous trees because its spring growth begins around the same season and both tolerate partial shade in well-drained soil. Mock orange makes a useful shrub companion for larger plantings, providing height behind the low bulbs but leaving open ground along its outer edge for colonies to expand. Nemesia can share patio containers, adding a second layer of cool-season flowers above and around the compact Muscari foliage.
