Blue Zephyr brachyscome is sure to provide the cool blue in your landscape or cottage garden. This plant is another great way to add some blue to your landscape, borders, edgings and container gardens. Lavender and blue tones on this relative of asters and cornflowers cover delicate lacy leaves and are great when massed out on their own as well.
Native to Australia, Zones 9a to 11b, this sun loving annual will perform well in your Zones 3-9 full sun gardens giving you spring and summer color and vigor when you plant out after danger of the last frost. This daisy-like dainty flower is also fragrant, giving you a treat for all your senses. Pair this annual with bacopa, nemesia and calibrachoas for a complimentary presentation.
Blue Zephyr Brachyscome Care
Easy to maintain with a regular fertilization regimen, this annual prefers good draining soil kept moderately moist. While you don’t want to water it too heavily and damage the airy fern-like foliage, you don’t want to dry it out either. A soil pH of 5.5 to 5.8, slightly acidic, is easy enough to maintain with a top dressing of compost. Like most daisy-like annuals, brachyscome is susceptible to powdery mildew. A topical fungicide found in most hardwares can be applied if you experience problems.
Deadheading is important for brachyscome as flowering will taper off if not pruned once in a while. These delicate blooms will not last long so light shearing with sharp scissors will keep you flush with flowers all season long and strengthen the airy foliage. Container gardening makes this an easy process for you without much fuss.
Blue Zephyr Brachyscome Spacing
A medium mounding plant topping out at about 16 inches and spreading out 16 inches, give this plant 12 to 16 inches of spacing between plants to increase air circulation and help prevent powdery mildew and other fungal diseases. This cool blue flowering annual with yellow centers also makes great cut flowers to extend appreciation of your garden inside your home.
