A true tropical indulgence for warm-climate gardens, Brewster Lychee bears heavy clusters of glossy, deep-red fruit with fragrant, white flesh that’s sweet with a lively tang. Litchi chinensis 'Brewster' matures about 15 to 20 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide in home gardens with pruning, though older trees can grow larger in ideal tropical conditions. Shimmering evergreen leaves lend a polished, exotic look year-round, and the summer crop turns patios and courtyards into a tasting room for fresh lychee, sorbets, and cocktails. We recommend it for lychee fans who do not mind a larger seed because the scent and flavor are memorable right from the first peeled fruit.

Brewster Lychee Tree Care

Plant Brewster Lychee Tree in spring once the soil has warmed and nights are mild. Choose full sun to partial sun, spacing trees 10 to 15 feet apart for light penetration and air flow. Slightly acidic, well-drained soil with organic matter and a pH around 5.0 to 6.5 is preferred, and planting on a low mound helps in areas with slow drainage. Young trees are cold-tender and should be protected below ~32°F.

Prune right after harvest to shorten tall shoots, remove crowded interior growth, and give new leaves time to harden before cooler weather. Heavy cuts can delay fruiting.

Growing Brewster Lychee Tree

Brewster Lychee Tree has no fixed chill-hour requirement, but fruiting is often better after a cooler, drier winter followed by warm spring growth. This lychee is generally self-fertile but sets heavier with another lychee nearby to overlap bloom. Harvest is usually mid-June to early July in warm lychee-growing regions, and fruit should be picked when most of the shell is deep reddish-purple rather than half green. Cut whole clusters several inches behind the fruit, then refrigerate soon after harvest because lychee skin browns quickly even while the flesh stays sweet.

Growing Brewster Lychee Tree in Containers

Brewster Lychee Tree can be started in a container, but it is not a long-term patio tree for dependable fruit because the vine-free, upright canopy wants more root room as it matures. Use a 15 to 25 gallon pot only for young trees, then shift to an in-ground location before the root ball becomes tight and growth slows. Repot during warm weather, handle roots gently, and keep the trunk at the same soil depth rather than burying it deeper.

Watering Brewster Lychee Tree

Give young Brewster Lychee Tree a slow soak across the entire root area, and let the surface begin to dry before watering again. During flowering and fruit swell, steady moisture helps reduce fruit drop. Overhead watering should be avoided because damp foliage and crowded canopies can increase disease pressure.

Feeding Brewster Lychee Tree

Feed lightly in spring as new growth begins, using a balanced citrus/avocado-type fertilizer that emphasizes potassium for fruit quality rather than a heavy lawn-style nitrogen product. After harvest, apply a modest follow-up feeding and fresh compost around the outer canopy line so the tree can rebuild strong branch tips for the next bloom cycle.
