- Bright Red, Orange, Pink, Green or Yellow Stalks
- 10-12 Inches Tall
- 24-36 Inches Wide
- Plant in Full Sun
This 1988 All-American Selection award winner is so beautiful that you’ll be tempted to add it to both your vegetable and perennial gardens. Its green and dark purple savoyed leaves appear in an array of bright red, orange, pink, green or yellow stalks. The leaf veins are brightly colored as well.
Harvest young 4 to 6-inch-long leaves after 30 days to eat raw and mature leaves after 50 days to add to cooked dishes. Cut leaves about two inches above the plant’s base and it will continue to produce new leaves.
Bright Lights Swiss Chard Care
Beta vulgaris 'Bright Lights' will reach a height of 20 inches with an 18 to 20-inch spread. Plant this annual vegetable in a full to part sun location in USDA plant hardiness zones 3 to 9. Space individual plants 10 to 18 inches apart in fertile well-drained soil. Swiss chard can tolerate light frosts and can be planted in your garden or container a few weeks before your last predicted frost date.
Growing Bright Lights Swiss Chard Plants
This plant makes an attractive edible addition to container gardens as a thriller plant. Create eye-catching container gardens by combining it with other edibles or annual flowers. Use a container that is at least 8 inches in diameter.
Watering Bright Lights Swiss Chard Plants
Keep the soil consistently moist throughout the growing season. Water if your garden has not received at least an inch of rainfall during the previous week. Container gardens dry out faster and will need to be watered more frequently.
Feeding Bright Lights Swiss Chard Plants
Amend the soil with good quality compost before planting. Swiss chard are not heavy feeders. Apply a nitrogen rich fertilizer if the plant’s vigor begins to decline before the end of the gardening season.
