Bronze Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a versatile, tasty, healthy, and beautiful aromatic perennial herb. Bronze Fennel is prized for its milder, more delicate flavor. All parts of this plant are edible (seeds, flowers, roots, leaves). Bronze Fennel is highly ornamental; its delicately textured, wispy, bronze-tinged leaves are lovely in the garden as well as in cut-flower arrangements. Bronze Fennel is a prized ingredient in Italian cooking, and its aromatic, licorice-flavored leaves and seeds are widely used as an herbal tea to soothe digestive issues. It’s a nectar and pollen host for many beneficial insects including the Swallowtail Butterfly.
Bronze Fennel Care
Plant this perennial herb in spring when all danger of frost has passed. Find a location with well-drained, fertile soil in full sun. Bronze Fennel has a deep tap root, so do not relocate it once it's planted. Give it plenty of space as it can grow up to 5 ft in height and equally as wide. Provide plenty of air circulation, and water the plant's roots, not the delicate leaves, as this can cause yellowing. Bronze fennel is hardy in zones 4-8.
Growing Bronze Fennel
Bronze Fennel prefers to be planted in plenty of sun, in rich, moist, well-drained soil. It is fairly drought tolerant. Cut back the stems at the end of the season after seeds have formed and have been harvested.
Bronze Fennel can be grown in larger containers as a filler or thriller: be sure to select a container with excellent drainage and ample space, and use soil rich in organic matter. Bronze Fennel is just so beautiful on its own or paired with other plants in the landscape.
Watering Bronze Fennel
Keep the soil moist, giving Bronze Fennel at least an inch of water per week. Water more freely in dry summer weather.
Feeding Bronze Fennel
Soil fertility will affect the flavor of Fennel, so provide the best foundation for this plant by planting it in a rich, well-draining, loamy soil amended with plenty of organic compost.
