Hoping to add some character to a somewhat dull space in your home or office? Bronze Pilea, with its wrinkled texture and delicately crimped edges, is a superior option. The leaves of this herbaceous perennial, otherwise known as Pilea spruceana and Pilea ‘Bronze’, feature silver streaks of lightning supported by bronze backgrounds that melt into basil green and plum as the foliage matures. Low maintenance, pet friendly, and humidity tolerant, this gorgeous South American original is also an evergreen, so with it soon resting atop a desk or table, that boring spot in your home or office will be inviting all year long.
Best Locations For Growing Bronze Pilea
A tropical native, Bronze Pilea adores humidity and warm temperatures. Maintaining this perennial in the range of 50% to 70% humidity and temperatures between 65° to 85° will keep this plant happy year-round. A bathroom or kitchen would be a superb spot to maintain this perennial. Plus, this pilea is nontoxic to people and pets, so you don’t have to worry about curious little hands or paws reaching out to touch its leaves.
Bronze Pilea Sunlight Requirements
Bronze Pilea prefers bright to medium indirect light. Choose a room with an east, west, or north-facing window. Access to medium indirect light will improve its variegated markings and encourage bushier growth.
Bronze Pilea Care
Choose a 6-inch pot for your Bronze Pilea’s new home. Plant it in aerated, acidic, loamy soil that drains well. An average potting soil amended with peat moss/coco coir/perlite will improve richness and drainage. Repot the pilea when it grows twice its size, normally every one or two years.
Low maintenance, this striking perennial does not require frequent pruning. Simply trim any diseased, damaged, or dead leaves as they appear. If you desire a bushier plant, you can also trim foliage for shape.
Watering Bronze Pilea
Water Bronze Pilea one time per week; however, to avoid developing fungal disease and to encourage growth, do a moisture check prior to watering. If the top 1 to 2 inches of soil are dry, then water. If not, wait a day or two to check again. Additionally, if you notice wilting leaves, a sign of dehydration, water until the top 1 to 2 inches are sufficiently moist.
Feeding Bronze Pilea
Feed Bronze Pilea one time during the spring and summer with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer at a quarter of the strength recommended by the manufacturer.
