Huge, peony-style blooms define Brother Cadfael English Shrub Rose. Rosa 'AUSglobe' produces clear pink flowers up to 5 inches across, fully rounded and packed with petals, yet they sit upright instead of nodding under their own weight. The shrub matures around 5 feet tall and 4 feet wide, forming a strong, vertical presence in the border. Compared to many large-flowered roses that sprawl or flop, this one keeps its composure. We recommend it when customers ask for the biggest bloom possible without sacrificing structure.
Brother Cadfael was named for the monk-detective in Ellis Peters’ Shropshire novels and carries both character and performance. Its fragrance is deep and classic—rich Old Rose with real presence. Trials in colder regions have shown it to be winter hardy, and established plants have demonstrated good disease resistance in public garden evaluations. Repeat flushes continue through the season, and the blooms are excellent for cutting thanks to their thick petals and sturdy stems.
Brother Cadfael English Shrub Rose Care
Plant in a bright, open location with at least six hours of direct sun daily. Prepare the planting area deeply, incorporating organic matter into soil that drains well and falls within a pH range of 6.0 to 7.0. Water thoroughly at planting and maintain steady moisture through the first growing season, allowing the upper soil to dry slightly between soakings. Feed in spring with a granular rose fertilizer and repeat after the first major bloom cycle to sustain performance. Avoid cramped spacing to help foliage dry quickly after rain.
Prune in late winter by reducing overall height and removing older interior canes to keep airflow moving through the shrub. In hotter regions, a light midsummer trim can rein in excess growth and encourage a fresh flush. Deadhead promptly to extend flowering. Clean up fallen leaves at season’s end to reduce disease carryover.
Brother Cadfael English Shrub Rose Spacing
Allow 4 feet between plants so each shrub can develop its broad, upright form. For container culture, choose a pot at least 24 inches wide and deep to support the vigorous root system. Combine with tall delphinium for vertical contrast, low-growing dianthus at the front edge, or ornamental allium bulbs threaded through the planting for seasonal structure.
