Buckhead Bold™ Distylium (Distylium buxifolium 'ZhDis12-16') showcases evergreen foliage in a deep green hue that lasts all year. New growth appears with a slight burgundy tint, providing added color interest. This shrub reaches around 4 to 5 feet tall, making it suitable for foundation plantings or mixed borders. It sets itself apart by combining dependable structure with notable disease resistance.
Its densely branched form offers a neat silhouette, and deer typically leave it alone. Originating in Asia, this relative of witch hazel tolerates heat and moderate drought once established. Maintenance needs are minimal, and the subtle flowers are an attractive bonus in late winter. Put it to use for hedges, screening, or mass plantings, or try it in patio containers for evergreen texture.
Buckhead Bold™ Distylium Care
Plant it in well-draining soil with a mildly acidic to neutral pH. Full to partial sun keeps foliage healthy, but it adapts to partial shade in hotter climates. Water regularly during the first season, then reduce frequency once roots have settled. Feed with a balanced fertilizer each spring to support new growth.
Light trimming after the flowering period helps maintain shape. Pinch or thin crowded stems if needed, and remove damaged branches promptly. Shearing can create a formal hedge, while minor thinning ensures good airflow. In colder regions, mulch around the base to protect the root zone, and move container specimens to a sheltered spot.
Buckhead Bold™ Distylium Spacing
For row or mass plantings, leave 4 to 5 feet between each shrub to accommodate its mature spread. Single specimens in borders or near entryways should have enough space on all sides to allow proper circulation. A container at least 16 inches wide suits a new plant, and upgrading to a larger pot helps it thrive long-term.
