Feature
The Bulbosa Air Plant is a versatile and spectacular little houseplant. With its smooth wavy leaves and a bulbous base, this is an absolutely gorgeous specimen to add to any home or office. It also produces a beautiful red flower in striking contrast with its green leaves. Its leaves turn deep purple before the plant blooms. This plant is an Epiphyte, which means it basically floats in air and thrives without soil. It is a native of the jungles, mountaintops, and deserts of Mexico and Central South America.
Best Locations For Growing Bulbosa Air Plant
Being an air plant, this houseplant does not require any soil. It absorbs needed nutrients and water from the air through the scales on its leaves. This is a wonderful little plant to grow in a bathroom as it thrives on high humidity. Air plants do well both inside and outside as long as they are not exposed to very low temperatures. Try growing it on stones, seashells, wood, baskets or bowls. You can initially attach them to most any surface with a loosely tied piece or string or cord until their own root fibers take hold. Floral adhesive can also be used to attach the air plant to the desired surface.
Bulbosa Air Plant Sunlight Requirements
This air plant prefers bright, indirect sunlight or artificial lighting. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves and slow growth.
Bulbosa Air Plant Care
This air plant requires a good amount of sunlight or artificial light, although direct sunlight is too intense. Place it a couple feet away from an east- or west-facing window or artificial light source, or on a patio. Avoid dimly lit locations. This house plant prefers temperatures in the range of 50 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit and can handle temperature fluctuations. It is cold hardy to zone 10 of the USDA hardiness map. The easiest way to propagate your air plant is to separate offsets, or pups, that grow from the base of the mother plant.
Watering Bulbosa Air Plant
To water this houseplant, place it face down in water, either in a bowl or the sink, once every 1 to 2 weeks. Allow it to soak for 10-20 minutes. After soaking, it’s important to gently shake the excess water off and allow the plant to drain on a cloth or paper towel. This prevents any rot developing in between the fold of the leaves. Once a month, mist this air plant with a mixture of water and a soluble fertilizer formulated for epiphytes, bromeliads, or air plants.
Feeding Bulbosa Air Plant
Fertilize sparingly once or twice monthly, usually during a soak, or you can spray the plant with a fertilizer mist. Use a good tillandsia fertilizer that is diluted to one-quarter of the recommended strength.
