If you need a vegetable to get you and your family to start loving edible gardening, Burpee's Best Zucchini Hybrid is the plant for you. Zucchini plants are easy to grow and famous for their big yields. This best hybrid produces 6- to 8-inch fruit in only 40 days from planting. The plant should continue to produce fruit from its large yellow-orange blooms regularly throughout the summer.

Zucchini is a versatile vegetable for kitchen gardens. The fruit is delicious as fresh slices for vegetable platters, stuffed, sautéed, roasted or steamed. Harvest zucchini by cutting it off the vine at the fruit's stem.

Burpee Hybrid Zucchini Plant Care

A type of summer squash, zucchini grows best in full sun (at least 6 hours a day) in summer months. Plant zucchini after the last frost in your area as soil warms to at least 60 degrees. You can plant a second zucchini a few weeks later, into mid-summer, to ensure fruit all season long. The soil should drain well and be rich with organic matter. Since zucchini roots are fairly shallow, mulching around the base of the plant will help retain moisture below.

Growing Burpee Hybrid Zucchini Plants

Within 6 weeks from planting, you should be able to harvest your first zucchini fruit. Harvest regularly, while fruit is small, for best flavor. Leaving fruit on the plant will send too much energy into making larger fruit than to setting new fruit. Space zucchini plants at least 4 feet apart to make room for each plant's spread.

You can grow zucchini in a container but need a pot at least 24 inches across and a foot deep to give the plant room to grow. The plant is not picky about its conditions but needs a lightweight potting mix for best health.

Watering Burpee Hybrid Zucchinis

Zucchini plants need regular watering, especially during dry, hot periods of summer. They need an average of 1 to 2 inches of rainwater or irrigation each week. Slow drip or soaker hoses are the best way to water.

Feeding Burpee Hybrid Zucchinis

Fertilize when the plant begins producing flowers to help give energy for fruit production. Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer meant for vegetables or an organic product like compost tea.
