If you are looking for a low-maintenance plant that does well indoors, then Button Fern is your champion. This New Zealand original has curved fronds of rounded, evergreen leaves that delicately fall about the sides of a pot. Adoring humidity and indirect sunlight, this gem is also nontoxic to people and pets. Whether sitting atop your desk or bedside table, if reasonably cared for, “Button Fern” can offer you color and company year-round.
Best Locations For Growing Button Fern
Button Ferns prefer rooms with bright, indirect sunlight and 50% humidity. Any room that provides these two conditions such as a kitchen or living room is ideal.
Button Fern Sunlight Requirements
Button Ferns do well in bright, indirect sunlight but can also grow in low light.
Button Fern Care
Since Button Ferns tend to be small, weekly pruning is not required. Fronds will die, however, so simply remove the dead ones in order to help the plant regenerate new ones.
Regarding repotting? When a pot no longer has room for the roots to easily grow, repot your Button Fern in a vessel that is a little larger than the first one. This usually is only necessary yearly for young plants and every two years for mature ones.
With respect to humidity–since these plants adore it–ensure that your Button Fern’s environment has 40% to 50%. In particular, do not place it in rooms with heating devices such as fireplaces that deplete the air of moisture.
Finally, these plants do not like sitting in wet soil; proper drainage is key. A 6-8-inch pot filled with a good indoor potting soil amended with sand or perlite and peat moss should provide an adequately aerated home for your perennial prize.
Watering Button Fern
Water your Button Fern when the top one inch of soil is slightly dry. If you notice the presence of yellowish, wilted fronds, cease watering. This is an indication of overwatering. Trim the injured fronds and wait to water until a moisture check indicates dryness.
Feeding Button Fern
Feed your Button Fern with a diluted (50%) water-soluble 20-20-10 fertilizer during the growing season.
