The botanically named Dieffenbachia maculata 'Camille', or the Dumb Cane plant as it is more widely known, is a great houseplant for adding impact to an indoor space. With its large, cream-and-dark-green leaves and height of up to 6 feet high, it is ideal for adding some jungle vibes to any room or office space. Fittingly named due to its sap, which if ingested can cause the tongue to swell and make speech impossible, it needs to be grown with care.
Best Locations For Growing Camille Dieffenbachia
The Camille Dieffenbachia is classified as a poisonous plant and thus should not be grown where children or animals are present. That being said, it is a tolerant plant and will grow in any room as long as it receives enough light and water.
Camille Dieffenbachia Sunlight Requirements
Being an easy-to-grow plant, the Camille Dieffenbachia can cope with most light levels. However, for it to thrive, it requires bright indirect light. It is advisable to avoid any strong direct light though as this can burn and damage its leaves.
Camille Dieffenbachia Care
Being poisonous, it is important to wear gloves when handling this plant, and if any sap comes into contact with skin, thorough washing is required. Favoring a warm environment, this plant likes to be grown at 65 to 75 ºF and kept away from any cold drafts. Although the Camille Dieffenbachia will grow happily in average indoor humidity levels, higher humidity or misting regularly is preferred if possible. To prevent leggy stems, the growing tips can be pinched off, which will encourage thick new growth to appear.
Watering Camille Dieffenbachia
The Camille Dieffenbachia prefers to be grown in moist, free-draining soil. Being sensitive to root rot, it is key not to overwater this plant and to only water when the top inch of soil is dry. As a guideline, a weekly watering will usually be enough.
Feeding Camille Dieffenbachia
With moderate to fast growth, the Camille Dieffenbachia will benefit from being fed during the growing season. To feed this plant, a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer can be applied monthly from spring until fall.
