The Carmen Sweet Pepper is thick, juicy, and unbelievably sweet, making it a wonderful choice when looking to create the perfect vegetable garden. This bushy, high-yielding plant grows about 28 inches tall and produces 6-inch long (5 oz.), horn-shaped peppers that turn scarlet when ripe, though they are even sweet when harvested green. The Carmen is adaptable to both growing in a garden and container and is not too fussy when it comes to climate. Maturing after about 75 days, this plant is one of the easiest pepper plants you will find.

Carmen Sweet Pepper Plant Care

Plant Carmen Sweet Pepper in full sun in the spring once the threat of frost has passed and nighttime temperatures are above 60°F. Place individual plants about 18 inches apart to ensure that each plant receives plenty of air flow and light. Pepper plants grow best in rich, well-draining soil and need to be watered regularly, especially in hot and dry weather.

Growing Carmen Sweet Pepper Plant

Once Carmen Sweet Pepper Plants are transplanted into a garden, the fruits can mature in about 75 days, turning from deep green to vibrant scarlet red. It is best to keep plants well watered, watering deeply to encourage deep root growth. Carmen Sweet Pepper is a sturdy, bushy plant and at 28 inches tall, shouldn’t need staking.

Because the Carmen Sweet Pepper Plant is so adaptable and easy to care for, it grows well in containers. Choose a pot with drainage holes that is greater than 12 inches in diameter and use high-quality, well-draining potting soil. Plants in containers will need water more frequently than those in the ground.

Watering Carmen Sweet Pepper Plant

Water the Carmen Sweet Pepper Plant deeply every 2-3 days (more often in hotter climates) by placing a hose at the base of the plant and allowing the water to seep into the soil for several minutes. Avoid wetting the leaves of the plant as this can spread foliar diseases.

Feeding Carmen Sweet Pepper Plant

Amend soil with compost and manure prior to planting the Carmen Sweet Pepper Plant to set the plant up for success. Pepper plants can be fertilized early on with a general-purpose fertilizer and benefit from a vegetable-specific formula as they age.
