Cat's Eye Dwarf Bearded Irises offer unusually intricate coloring with mauve-rose standards above dark red falls marked by near-black veining and a broad rose edge. The old-gold beards with violet at the base give each flower considerably more detail than its small stature of 15 inches suggests. This Iris pumila, a standard dwarf bearded iris, flowers in early to midseason and forms dense fans of blue-green foliage around its low flower stems. 

Introduced by iris breeder Paul Black in 2002, Cat's Eye earned an Honorable Mention in 2004, an Award of Merit in 2006, and the Cook-Douglas Medal in 2008, the American Iris Society's top medal for standard dwarf bearded irises. The flowers have a slight spicy fragrance, adding another detail that is easy to notice at close range. This compact iris suits rock gardens, edging, raised beds, and wide patio containers, and established rhizomes in USDA zones 4-9 gradually expand into larger clumps. Deer and rabbits generally avoid bearded iris.

Cat's Eye Dwarf Bearded Iris Bulbs Care

Plant Cat's Eye Dwarf Bearded Iris Bulbs in late summer or early fall, giving the rhizomes time to root before winter settles in. Position them in full sun for the heaviest bloom, or partial sun with at least 5 hours of direct light. Bearded iris performs best in sharply drained garden soil with a neutral to mildly alkaline pH, roughly 6.5 to 8.0; heavy soil should be loosened or raised so moisture does not collect around the rhizome.

Set each rhizome on a shallow mound with the roots spread downward, then cover the roots while leaving the upper surface of the rhizome exposed or barely covered. During the first growing season, water deeply when the top few inches of soil have dried; allow established plants to go longer between waterings. Apply a low-nitrogen fertilizer around the clump as spring growth starts, followed by a light second application after flowering to support the next season's bud development. Keep mulch several inches away from the rhizomes because trapped moisture around the crown can encourage decay.

After flowering, cut the finished stalks close to their bases while leaving healthy foliage in place through the growing season. Remove yellowing or damaged leaves as needed, then trim remaining fans to about 6 inches in late fall and clear dead debris from the planting area. Every three to four years, divide crowded clumps in late summer and replant the firm outer rhizomes with healthy fans and roots attached.

Allow about 12 to 18 inches between rhizomes in garden beds so the clumps can expand with good air movement around the foliage. One to three rhizomes can be grown in a broad 10- to 12-inch container filled with a gritty, fast-draining potting mix, with the rhizome tops positioned at the surface. In zones 4-6, move exposed containers against a sheltered wall or sink the pots into the ground for winter protection.

Sedum shares Cat's Eye's preference for sun and drainage, making it a natural perennial neighbor in rock gardens and dry border fronts. Japanese euonymus shrubs can provide a durable woody backdrop in larger beds, giving the low iris clumps a defined evergreen setting. Geraniums can occupy a shared patio container after iris flowering has finished, extending seasonal color while leaving the rhizome crown open to light and air.
