Charlotte™ Rose has a gently cupped flower shape that slightly flattens as it matures, giving it the classic English rose shape. The pale yellow of the central petals fades to almost a creamy white at the outer edges. Charlotte™ is an upright grower with an understated tea fragrance and blooms continuously through even the hottest summers. Charlotte™ was introduced in 1993 and has been a favorite yellow rose of gardeners all over the world ever since.

Charlotte™ English Rose was developed to withstand hotter and more humid growing conditions. This shrub rose is recommended for USDA zones 5-11 and will need extra winter protection when grown in containers in colder zones. The fully double flowers boast over 100 petals a flower and make for lovely dried potpourri or an edible garnish on salads or baked goods. Shrub roses will tolerate urban pollution easily and are not bothered by salt spray when planted in a garden near the ocean. The deep green foliage is not susceptible to mildew and fungal diseases and stays clear all summer.

Charlotte™ English Rose Care

Roses need to be planted in full sun and in well-draining soil. Soil that drains poorly or is heavy with clay will rot the roots and cause death for shrub roses. This rose thrives in soil with an average texture and a neutral pH. Provide organic compost as a mulch in the spring. The compost will aid in moisture retention and will improve the nutrient levels over time. Allow for one inch of water per week. Drip irrigation or soaker hoses are perfect for getting water directly to the root zone while keeping the foliage as dry as possible. Fertilize in the spring with a formulation for roses and other flowering shrubs. A granular, slow-release formula will provide nutrients all season long.

Shrub roses require pruning late in the winter after all threat of frost has passed. Prune out the oldest canes to the ground and remove any dead, diseased, or dying stems. Deadheading during the summer not only encourages continued blooming but also helps to keep the shrubs compact and densely branched. Cut the spent flower stems back to just above a set of leaves. Winter protection will be required in the lower growing zones. Mulch shrubs growing in the ground with 5-6 inches of shredded leaves, arborist chips, or straw.  Roses planted in containers can be wrapped in burlap or horticultural fabric layers to insulate the root system. Moving pots to a more sheltered location or even an unheated garage will ensure that roses in growing zones 5-7 survive the winter.

Charlotte™ English Rose Spacing

The overall height and spread for Charlotte™ is 3-4 feet. Plant roses 40 inches apart center on center for a dense informal hedge. Container-grown roses will require a pot with at least a 12-inch diameter or 5-gallon capacity.
