The Chef's Choice Purple Tomato is an indeterminate, heirloom variety that is highly flavorful. Known botanically as Solanum lycopersicum, this plant produces rounded, globe-like fruit that weighs 9 to 10 ounces. The fruit is smooth and firm and transitions from green to red and eventually purple. The tomatoes are purple inside and out.
Chef's Choice Purple Tomato Care
Sow seeds or transplant seedlings outside after there is no longer a chance of frost. Use moist, well-drained soil with increased organic content. The Chef's Choice Purple Tomato requires full sun, so plant it in a spot that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight. Space plants 36 inches apart. Use a tomato cage or trellis to support the plants.
Growing Chef's Choice Purple Tomato
The plants can grow 6 feet tall or more, so ensure plenty of room is available. The purple tomatoes are ready to pick about 80 days after planting.
The Chef's Choice Purple Tomato can grow in containers, allowing for placement on a balcony or deck. Use a cage or trellis to support the plant and water when the soil is dry. Container-grown plants may need water daily, especially if located in a sunny spot.
Watering Chef's Choice Purple Tomato
Water consistently and deeply to keep the soil evenly moist. Tomatoes need consistent moisture to prevent cracking but cannot thrive in soggy conditions, so drainage is vital.
Feeding Chef's Choice Purple Tomato
Fertilize every 4 to 6 weeks. Use a product intended for tomatoes or roses and follow the instructions on the packaging.
