Searching for a novel gift to put a smile on a friend’s face? Or hunting for a low maintenance, hardy plant to add to your home/office collection? Well, Chinese Money Plant, otherwise known as Pilea peperomioides, Friendship plant, Pancake Plant, and UFO Plant, may be just what you are looking for! This perennial succulent with its disc-shaped, emerald-green foliage dotted with ivory spots is rumored in certain Chinese circles to offer good luck to its recipients. While the jury is still out regarding the validity of these whispers, there is plenty of evidence to support that this perennial succulent is the perfect choice for any newbie gardener with little free time to spare.  Provided persistent temperatures and elevated humidity, this lovely herbaceous succulent will provide color and charm all-year long.

Best Locations For Growing Chinese Money Plant

Chinese Money Plant thrives in medium to bright indirect light, temperatures ranging between 65°F to 75°F, and humidity levels between 50% to 75%. Since Chinese Money Plant is nontoxic to people and pets, you can display this lovely evergreen perennial in any room and not worry about little hands or little paws.

Chinese Money Plant Sunlight Requirements

Chinese Money Plant prefers medium to bright indirect light. While this herbaceous succulent can also tolerate low light, its leaves may turn a deeper hue.  Any room with south-facing, west-facing or east-facing windows should provide ample light; however, make sure to move this lovely house plant out of any direct light to prevent sunburn.

Chinese Money Plant Care

Start your Chinese Money Plant in a 6-inch or 8-inch pot with fertile, acidic, well-draining soil. This fast-growing evergreen will normally need to be repotted only once every two to three years. If you want to increase your amount of good luck, you can propagate these emerald gems by using offsets. Give the new plant as a special token of friendship to a friend.

Watering Chinese Money Plant

This herbaceous succulent does not require frequent watering. Water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry and allow the soil to dry out a bit between watering sessions. Decrease the watering frequency in the winter.

Feeding Chinese Money Plant

Feed your Chinese Money Plant a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer once during the spring season and once during the summer. Dilute the formula to 50% of the manufacturer’s recommended strength.
