Save yourself some trips to the store and enjoy fresh lettuce from your patio, balcony or vegetable garden from this City Garden Mix Lettuce. The mix is a cut-and-come again leaf lettuce that you can harvest over and over by cutting off fresh greens and leaving about 2 inches to regrow. You really can't beat the convenience, nutritional benefit and freshness of growing your own greens. Plus, this mixture of red and green leaf lettuces will look pretty in a garden row, patio container or on a plate.
Lettuce is one of the easiest vegetables to grow. If you've never had an edible garden, start with this easy plant. You will have lettuce leaves to harvest in 2 weeks or so, as soon as the plant is rooted and growing. You even can plant City Garden Mix Lettuce below flowers in a garden bed for added color. Planting the lettuce alongside other vegetables or flowers helps cool the ground around those plants and helps control weeds in a vegetable garden.
City Garden Mix Lettuce Care
City Garden Mix and other lettuces prefer cooler temperatures but need at least 6 hours of sun a day. The lettuce grows well in sunny spring months in most climates. In warmer areas, or as summer approaches, give your lettuce some afternoon shade either with a shade cloth, taller companion plant, or by moving a container. Unlike some edibles, lettuce plants tend to slow down and even go dormant in hot summer. The good news is you can plant the lettuce mix again in late summer for fall harvests. Gently remove the plant from its pot by squeezing the bottom to loosen the soil and then tipping the lettuce out into your hand. Any average garden soil or potting mix will do. Place the lettuce to match the level it was at in the pot you purchased. Space several lettuce plants 6 to 18 inches apart for a higher yield of greens.
Growing City Garden Mix Lettuce
City Garden Mix Lettuce is ready to eat as soon as true leaves form. If the lettuce grows too large, especially in hotter weeks, the leaves can become bitter. It's best to harvest lettuce in the cooler, damper morning than at mid-day. The plant usually grows to about 6 inches high. You also can grow this lettuce indoors when the weather is too hot or cold outside. Just be sure to give it plenty of light from a fluorescent or grow light setup.
City Garden Mix Lettuce grows well in containers, which adds some flexibility to where you plant and to adjusting sun or shade exposure with the change in the sun's path. Just about any container that drains will work, and a shallow, wide one is fine for lettuce. Give the plants at least 6 inches of depth for the roots. Place the plants in a fresh, high-quality potting mix. Water slowly and regularly.
Watering City Garden Mix Lettuce
Water City Garden Mix Lettuce consistently. The greens will taste better with regular moisture. Water a little more often during hot, dry periods.
Feeding City Garden Mix Lettuce
You can keep the plants healthy and green with occasional fertilizing. Use a water-soluble balanced fertilizer every two weeks when you water your container lettuce to give it added nutrients. Outdoors, you can add similar fertilizer, compost tea or other organic nutrients about every two weeks to the ground around the leaves.
