Classic Dutch Garden Bulbs turn a fall planting into a succession of flowers stretching from late winter through early summer. This 125-bulb collection is modeled on the layered bulb displays associated with Keukenhof Gardens in Holland, combining different colors, flower forms, and heights from about 6 to 20 inches. The collection includes allium, tulip, daffodil, hyacinth, and crocus bulbs.

Different members of the collection take turns flowering from roughly February through June, creating a long season of color. The assortment is hardy in USDA zones 3-8 and includes pollinator-friendly flowers that can provide forage across several stages of spring. Use the bulbs through mixed borders, around deciduous shrubs, beside walks, or across about 5 square feet of prepared garden soil for a concentrated display. 

Classic Dutch Garden Bulbs Care

Plant Classic Dutch Garden Bulbs in fall, ideally about six weeks before the ground freezes, giving the bulbs time to begin rooting before winter chilling. Full sun to partial shade works well, with the strongest overall flowering in several hours of spring sun each day. Prepare loose, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH around 6.0 to 7.0, loosening compacted ground 8 to 10 inches deep before planting.

Because bulb sizes vary within the collection, set each one at roughly three times its own height, usually about 4 to 6 inches deep, with the pointed end facing upward when one is obvious. Water the entire bed deeply after planting. Begin watering in spring whenever active growth coincides with a prolonged dry spell, and allow beds to become drier as summer dormancy approaches. A balanced granular bulb fertilizer can be applied as shoots begin appearing, following the product rate across the bed rather than feeding individual bulbs separately. 

Remove individual flower heads after they finish when practical, but keep all green stems and leaves in place until they lose their color naturally. Since this collection flowers in stages, cleanup is best done gradually instead of cutting the entire bed down at once. If certain bulb groups become crowded and flowering decreases after several seasons, lift and separate those clumps only after their foliage has completed its cycle.

Classic Dutch Garden Bulbs Spacing

Space bulbs about 3 to 6 inches apart, adjusting slightly for bulb size. Arrange in loose drifts rather than straight rows to create a layered garden effect. The full 125-bulb collection can cover roughly 5 square feet when planted densely, or it can be divided among several beds and large containers. For pots, choose containers at least 12 inches deep with generous drainage and group compatible bulb sizes together so planting depth and watering are easier to manage. In colder climates, protect above-ground containers from repeated deep freezing while still exposing the bulbs to winter chilling.

Classic Dutch Garden Bulbs Companion Plants

Columbine works well around a partially shaded bulb planting because its spring growth begins as many early bulbs are finishing, helping carry the bed into the next part of the season. Viburnum can provide a permanent shrub backdrop for a larger display, giving the bulb collection an established framework and plenty of open soil at the front for seasonal emergence. Lobelia is a useful container companion, filling the lower edge of large pots after taller spring bulbs emerge and performing well in cool spring conditions.
