Sun‑saturated oranges steal the show in the Clementine Combination. Superbells® Double Amber and Dreamsicle® calibrachoas spill amber and bright tangerine blooms over the rim, and Vermillionaire® cuphea rises through the center like a fiery fountain. Color bursts from late spring through the first hard frost, all on a compact frame that tops out around 18–28 inches at the cuphea’s peak. Hummingbirds dart in for the tubular cuphea blooms while butterflies circle the petunia‑style calibrachoa flares.
This trio packs more than eye‑catching petals. Cuphea’s desert heritage lends drought and heat tolerance; the Superbells® partners bring self‑cleaning flowers that never need picking. The combination forms a mounded‑then‑trailing habit, acting as a ready‑made thriller, filler, and spiller for porch pots, hanging baskets, or raised beds. Use a row of containers to flank a sunny entry, tuck a single basket under a pergola, or mass several recipes in a curbside planter for season‑long curb appeal.
Clementine Combination Care
Fill a 14–16 inch pot with a lightweight, peat‑based mix, then nestle the six starter plants at soil level. Place the container in at least six hours of direct light, though a touch of afternoon shade is welcome in scorching climates. Water deeply when the top inch of mix turns dry; calibrachoa roots object to constant moisture, so let excess drain freely. Feed every other week with a balanced, water‑soluble formula, and give the whole planting a light shear in midsummer to spark fresh branching.
Cuphea behaves as a tender perennial in USDA Zones 8–11; elsewhere it grows as a one‑season annual, and may overwinter indoors under bright grow lights. Calibrachoas thrive outside until freezing nights arrive, keeping containers colorful long after many summer flowers fade. Bring cuttings inside before frost if you’d like an early jump on next year’s baskets.
Clementine Combination Spacing
For quick coverage in a single 15‑inch basket or patio bowl, use the full recipe: two Vermillionaire® cupheas upright in the middle, flanked by two Double Amber and two Dreamsicle® Superbells® around the edge. Should you plant into larger whiskey barrels, repeat the six‑pack every 16 inches to create a continuous carpet. In raised beds, cluster groups of three 12–14 inches apart so the trailers can mingle without crowding cuphea’s stems.
