Colorado Blue Spruce makes a cold-climate landscape look established the day it goes in the ground. Picea pungens has stiff, sharply pointed needles in blue-green to silvery blue tones, held on strong horizontal branches that form a broad pyramidal outline. This needled evergreen can mature 50 to 75 feet tall and 10 to 20 feet wide, so it has the scale for windbreaks, privacy rows, and large specimen plantings. This is a great choice when you need dependable winter structure.
Native to the Rocky Mountains, Colorado Blue Spruce is built for cool climates, bright sun, and exposed sites. It grows at a slow to moderate pace, often adding about 12 to 24 inches per year once established. The dense branching gives birds shelter, while the cones provide seed food for species such as siskins, nuthatches, and crossbills. Use it as a lawn specimen, a living screen, a windbreak, or a large evergreen anchor at the back of a mixed border.
Colorado Blue Spruce Care
Plant Colorado Blue Spruce in full sun for the best color and densest growth, although it can tolerate partial shade. It grows best in moist, well-drained acidic soil, but it adapts to loam, clay, sandy soil, and average garden soils when drainage is good. Avoid hot, humid, poorly drained sites, since this spruce prefers cooler air and soil that does not stay saturated.
Water weekly during the first growing season, soaking deeply when the top inch of soil feels dry. Established trees have moderate drought tolerance, but young plants should not be allowed to dry out during summer heat. Fertilize in early spring with a slow-release evergreen fertilizer or balanced 10-10-10, and expect growth to slow during winter while the tree remains evergreen.
Pruning is rarely needed because Colorado Blue Spruce naturally develops a symmetrical pyramidal form. Remove dead, broken, or diseased branches as they appear, cutting back to healthy wood without leaving stubs. Avoid shearing into old bare wood, since spruce branches may not resprout from older stems.
Colorado Blue Spruce Spacing
Space Colorado Blue Spruce 10 to 20 feet apart for screens and windbreaks, using wider spacing when each tree should develop a full specimen shape. Plant at least 15 to 20 feet from buildings, driveways, and walks so the lower branches can spread naturally as the tree matures. Use only very large containers for young trees, and plan for eventual in-ground planting. Grow it with yew shrubs, juniper bushes, potentilla, and black-eyed Susans in sunny, well-drained beds for strong evergreen structure and drought tolerance.
