Colorama Dracaena is an excellent first houseplant for the new gardener. It is straightforward to care for and tolerant of a wide range of humidity and light levels. The multi-colored leaves of Colorama are flashy and add interest to any indoor plantscape. Colorama Dracaena is also known by the name Dragon Tree and is native to the island of Madagascar. While Colorama is typically considered a houseplant, in the warmest USDA zones of 10-12, Dracaena is grown outdoors as a small tree that can grow to be 15-20 feet high.
Best Locations For Growing Colorama Dracaena
Colorama Dracaena is great to use as a specimen floor plant in a protected entryway or corner of an office. Newly started plants can be used on top of shelves and tables while they are still small and compact. All parts of Dracaena are poisonous and should be kept away from children and pets.
Colorama Dracaena Sunlight Requirements
Indirect bright light is ideal for Colorama. The plant will retain its vividly colored leaves and grow moderately fast in higher-light levels. Lower light is also acceptable and does not affect the growth rate much. Moving Colorama Dracaena outdoors for the summer results in denser leaf growth. Place Colorama in a semi-shaded protected spot so that the direct sun of midday does not bleach the leaves.
Colorama Dracaena Care
Repot Dragon Tree when the roots grow out of the drainage holes or if the pot gets too small to support the top growth. Low, wide pots give taller, top-heavy trees like Colorama stability. Use a soil-based potting mix with plenty of perlite or vermiculite added for drainage. Prune off browning or dead leaves to keep the plant tidy and lessen the chances of infestation from pests and disease.
Watering Colorama Dracaena
Water Colorama once weekly when the top 2-3 inches of soil are dry. Empty any excess water from saucers and cache pots, so the plant does not sit in water for long. Humidity levels are not crucial for Dracaena. Colorama thrives in an average humidity of 30-40%, although it will drop leaves if placed in front of air conditioning or heating vents.
Feeding Colorama Dracaena
Water with a diluted fertilizer once a month, year-round. Houseplant fertilizer with a balanced ratio of NPK is perfect and should be applied at half the manufacturer’s recommended strength. Alternatively, adding a granular, slow-release fertilizer to the soil at potting will slowly feed Colorama at each watering.
