The plant is heat tolerant with no pest or disease issues. Many gardeners will be happy to know that it is deer resistant. Use this tropical beauty as a spiller that adds drama to a hanging basket or container. It grows beautifully in combination pots or in your landscape. Place it in full sun or use it to brighten a shady spot.
ColorBlaze® Chocolate Drop Coleus Care
For a midsummer growth boost, fertilize in June, July, and August with an all-purpose, soluble fertilizer, avoiding one for flowering plants. Deadheading is not needed, but you may want to pinch out tips to encourage bushiness. Cut off spikes in late summer to promote new growth and extend the life of the coleus. Water the plant thoroughly at planting and do not allow it to dry out, watering when the top inch feels dry. It must have good drainage, therefore, plant it in humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil. ColorBlaze® Chocolate Drop Coleus thrives in a wide range of light locations from full sun to full shade.
Overwinter this coleus indoors as a houseplant. Before the first frost, cut back a healthy plant, check for insects, then locate it in a bright area in your home. It likes humidity, so place it on a tray filled with pebbles that are covered in water. Do not overwater. In the spring, fertilize and trim it back before slowly introducing it to the outdoors.
ColorBlaze® Chocolate Drop Coleus Spacing
In a 12-inch container try planting two Chocolate Drop coleus with two sedum mexicanum for a dramatic effect. Or place two impatiens, two sedum mexicanum, and one Chocolate Drop coleus in a hanging basket. In the landscape, plant the coleus close together as bedding plants.
