Most landscapes have some shady areas, and filling them with hardy perennials can be tough. That’s when it’s time to call in ColorBlaze Dipt in Wine Coleus (Solenostemon scutellarioides). The multi-colored foliage adds color to match any flower, and it produces the rich colors in sun, shade or a combination of both. Dipt in Wine features deep, crimson-colored leaves with yellow/green centers and lime-green edges.
This uniquely colored coleus can serve as the focal point of a container or grow in a bed or border. Once your potted coleus has done its job adorning a shady entryway, you can bring it inside to continue enjoying as a houseplant. Reaching up to 40 inches high and 24 inches wide, ColorBlaze Dipt in Wine Coleus can rock a shady corner of the yard or living room, or just about any spot in the landscape or on the patio.
ColorBlaze Dipt in Wine Coleus Care
With flowers only at the end of the growing season, there is no need to prune or deadhead ColorBlaze Dipt in Wine. Just plant it in average soil, water regularly and watch the leaves grow and color. Add an occasional dressing of compost or a balanced fertilizer to ensure the best coloring of your plant. Even though the leaves can color in shade, the plant also can tolerate heat, so you can place a potted coleus just about anywhere.
Before the first frost, bring your potted coleus indoors after checking and even treating it for possible insects or disease (so you don’t spread any hitchhikers to other house plants). Put the plant in a bright room if possible and keep it watered. Adding a pebble tray beneath to hold some water or spraying the foliage every few days can help give the coleus a little extra humidity while indoors. When it starts to grow in spring, prune to shape the plant and gradually introduce it to outdoor wind, sun and temperatures.
ColorBlaze Dipt in Wine Coleus Spacing
Plant more than one of this award-winning coleus in the landscape, using its deep crimson leaves to complement other foliage and flowers. Space the plants 1 to 2 feet apart to give them room to thrive. In containers, plant your coleus in the center or back and place low-growing annuals before it for contrast if you like.
