The ColorBlaze® El Brighto Coleus is all about foliage. This variegated stunner has broad, oblong leaves with toothed edges that come to a point. The foliage boasts purple and red centers with yellow along the edges. Coleus or Plectranthus scutellarioides bloom in the spring and summer, but the flowers tend to be rather plain, especially when compared to the brilliant foliage, so most gardeners remove them. Coleus is a large, colorful, and easy-to-maintain plant that makes a statement when added to a garden bed or container.
Coleus provides year-round color and does very well when grown in containers, landscapes, or mass plantings. Due to the unique and brightly colored foliage, this plant is commonly used as a focal point in plantings or containers. The ColorBlaze® El Brighto Coleus hails from Southeast Asia and is heat-tolerant. The plant grows as a perennial in USDA zones 10 and 11 and is used as an annual in other areas.
ColorBlaze® El Brighto Coleus Plant Care
Water and sun are crucial to plants, and the Coleus is no exception. This plant can handle sun to shade. Increased light will draw out the variegation and make the foliage visually pop, but the Coleus can also brighten up a shady spot. Thoroughly saturate the soil when watering to get the roots nice and wet, but only water when the soil is dry. Coleus is prone to root rot, so too much water can be damaging. Select a well-draining soil with a pH of 6.0 to 7.0. Feed the plant using a balanced fertilizer once a month for plants in the ground and every other week for potted plants.
Many gardeners believe Coleus foliage looks its best right before the plant blooms, so you can maintain the striking variegation of the foliage by pinching away the flower buds as they emerge. The ColorBlaze® El Brighto Coleus can easily overwinter indoors when grown in cold climates. Bring the plant inside before the temperatures drop, place it in a spot that receives bright light and has high humidity.
ColorBlaze® El Brighto Coleus Plant Spacing
The ColorBlaze® El Brighto Coleus is a large plant that can grow up to 40 inches tall and be 18 to 36 inches wide. Space this Coleus 18 to 36 inches apart from other plants when grown in the ground. Usually, one plant per pot is best when growing Coleus in a container.
