Flowers usually get all the attention in an outdoor space, but not when the ColorBlaze® Newly Noir™ Coleus is around. Striking foliage in deep, dark purple and black hues will draw the eye and make this plant the centerpiece of a landscape or patio. Commonly used as a thriller in containers, the ColorBlaze® Newly Noir™ Coleus provides a stunning contrast to more traditional green foliage plants. The Plectranthus scutellarioides blooms in the spring and summer, but the flowers are insignificant, and many gardeners remove them to avoid distracting from the foliage.

This plant is grown as a perennial in USDA zones 10 and 11, where it provides color throughout the year. In other areas, Coleus is used as an annual that is either brought indoors before the weather turns cold or dies back at the first hard frost. The ColorBlaze® Newly Noir™ Coleus originates from Southeast Asia and boasts broad leaves that narrow to a point and feature scalloped edges. Coleus is a versatile plant that can flourish in containers, landscapes, or mass plantings and is commonly used as a specimen or focal point.

ColorBlaze® Newly Noir™ Coleus Plant Care

The ColorBlaze® Newly Noir™ Coleus is not fussy and very easy to maintain. This plant can handle sun to shade, allowing it to thrive in most areas. Generally, about 4 to 6 hours of sunlight will suffice. Coleus plants like to dry out, so only water when the soil is dry, and keep in mind that plants in sunny spots will dry out more quickly. Well-draining soil will prevent root rot, and soil with a pH of 6.0 to 7.0 will support healthy growth. Coleus is not a heavy feeder but fertilize monthly starting in the spring and throughout the growing season to keep it looking its best. Feed potted Coleus every two weeks.

It is a matter of preference, but flowers can be removed. The flowers are not very showy, and the foliage is the focal point, so removing the blooms enables the plant to focus more energy on the foliage. The plant may look overgrown as the growing season progresses, and light pruning can clean it up. Coleus can live as a houseplant so before the weather turns chilly, transplant it into a container and bring it inside. As a houseplant, Coles needs bright indirect light and increased humidity.

ColorBlaze® Newly Noir™ Coleus Plant Spacing

Once mature and acclimated, the ColorBlaze® Newly Noir™ Coleus is a large plant, so make sure to give it the room it needs to grow. This Coleus can top out around 40 inches tall and spread out 18 to 36 inches. Space plants in the ground 18 to 24 inches apart to create a full, lush row of foliage. Based on the size, one Coleus is typically enough for a container.

Botched delivery by FedEx leaves 4 of 6 plants...

Posted by Nancy Jafar on May 23, 2022

The Newly Noir Coleus has not recovered from the botched delivery that took over a week in 85-90 degree heat. The plant has curled in on itself and has not put out any new growth. Although it seems to be alive, it is impossible to tell what it might look like.
