Coleus on the market today is not your grandmother’s coleus. Those serviceable but wimpy coleus were good only in the shade and they stayed very small. Meet Rediculous, a ridiculously beautiful coleus that is anything but wimpy. These new coleuses are bred for size, foliage color and tolerance of sun and shade. Yes, Rediculous can take full sun and still retain its deep red leaves all summer.
This upright beauty reaches 40 inches tall and 36 inches wide. Many of these new coleus are bred to delay blooming or not bloom at all. Rediculous coleus works well as the thriller plant in a container or as a strong background annual for pots up against a structure. Their size makes them ideal in the landscape, too, as an edger or border plant for summer or mixed with perennials to extend season color.
ColorBlaze® Rediculous® Coleus Care
Grow Rediculous in sun or shade. Water when the top inch of soil is dry to touch. If it gets too dry, leaves will wilt. Fertilize with an all-purpose product, following label directions for foliage plants. No flowers, no deadheading, but snip it back if it gets too tall. Always use a high quality potting mix for containers because it is specially formulated to promote drainage and good root development.
Coleus can be grown indoors as a houseplant. Provide bright light or full sun for the best leaf color. Before a hard frost, snip a piece of your summer annual and place in a glass of water indoors in a bright window. When roots form, pot in a small container moving it to larger pots as needed and enjoy all winter.
ColorBlaze® Rediculous® Coleus Spacing
Because of its size, consider using one Rediculous coleus as the main plant in most containers. In the ground, space 18 to 24 inches apart. For a plant that looks full and rich, stagger plants rather than planting them in straight rows. Or cluster three or five plants together for a punch of color.
