As shiny as a new penny! Copper foliage dominates this new award winning annual and you are going to love how it makes all your other foliage and flowers pop with an explosion of color. Twin leaves that emerge from the previous on square stems have a burgundy tint and then develop a copper sheen that is unrivaled in the annual world of foliage. Truly a one of a kind color for your full sun to light shade garden.
Coleus are native to SE Asia, India, Africa and Australia, Zones 10a through 11b where they are a tender perennial in the tropical regions of these countries. Used as houseplants and foliar interest since the Victorian age, coleus have brightened gardens for centuries. In Zones 3-9 they can be planted out after the danger of the last frost has passed and bring early spring color to your garden before the flowers bloom.
ColorBlaze® Sedona Sunset® Coleus Care
Caring for coleus involves providing rich organic well drained soil, light shade or full sun with some shade, plenty of water and nutrients at the proper time. They are members of the mint family and can tolerate average soil but do their best work when they are given the best. With a preference for a soil pH of 6.0 to 6.5, mildly acidic to neutral, they appreciate a good all purpose fertilizer when first planted, and occasional fertilizing with a water soluble fertilizer when they are planted in containers. Water when soil dries but before it begins to wilt.
Deadheading is not required, but if the plant should send up flower spikes, you have the choice to pinch them and continue to allow the plant to marshall its resources towards beautiful foliage, or letting it go to seed. Regular pruning may be needed to keep this plant within its bounds, though, as it can grow quite large. It will benefit from a light shearing from time to time to create additional branching and a more compact, fuller plant appearance.
ColorBlaze® Sedona Sunset® Coleus Spacing
Spacing is crucial as this plant grows in shaded areas most of the time and diseases can develop faster in areas that are not warmed by the sun. Growing up to 40 inches tall and spreading out to 36 inches, spacing plants 18 to 24 inches apart will give that valuable air circulation and help curb disease and insect infestations. Pair this plant with a plethora of sun and shade annuals like petunia, calibrachoa, nemesia, oxalis, impatiens, and with tall grasses such as pennisetum for truly fantastic summer display.
