ColorBlaze® Velveteen® Coleus might appear dramatic, but it is remarkably well behaved and easygoing. It proves that a stunning presentation does not always require much in preparation. The deep burgundy foliage blushes with fuchsia centers and understated variegation. Coleus foliage looks best before they bloom, and ColorBlaze® Velveteen® has a very late bloom. Some gardeners will find that theirs don’t bloom at all. Plus, this variety does well in either sun or shade, and is adaptable as a houseplant.
A “thriller” to its core, ColorBlaze® Velveteen® catches the eye with an upright habit that can grow up to 40” high at maturity. Lovely in large combination containers, the unique foliage complements its blooming companions in a way that others simply cannot. Plus, many will find that the colorful foliage and upright habit makes it great planted in stately containers on its own. ColorBlaze® Velveteen® do well in landscapes, as well, adding visual and textural interest to the space.
ColorBlaze® Velveteen® Coleus Care
If your Coleus begins to bloom, simply pinch off flowers to keep the foliage tidy. Fertilize upon planting with compost or a well-balanced fertilizer. Regularly fertilize containers to get the best performance. Water when soil is dry to the touch.
ColorBlaze® Velveteen® Coleus can be brought indoors as a houseplant at the end of the season. In order to grow it successfully indoors, you should only choose the healthiest plants to bring in. Be sure to bring it indoors before the first frost to avoid damage. It will do best in a bright, humid place. Only water when the top inch of soil is dry to avoid overwatering. Slowly get your plant used to the outdoors when spring arrives, and prune and fertilize at the start of the warm season to get best results.
ColorBlaze® Velveteen® Coleus Spacing
The upright ColorBlaze® Velveteen® Coleus can grow over three feet high in the best conditions, and only spreads to 16”. Plant them 12-16” apart, with a little less space in containers. They’ll do best in larger containers.
